The Tampa Bay Rays, founded in 1998, were for the first time ever in their club history after the regular season with a positive record at the top of the East Division of the American League and thus qualified for the postseason . They were able to secure the championship of the American League after a 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the ALDS (American League Division Series) and in a duel with the Boston Red Sox . In the ALCS (American League Championship Series) they had a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series and had to beat the Boston Red Sox, who have earned the reputation of the almost unbeatable ALCS team in recent years but suffer two defeats in a row. In the decisive seventh game, they beat the Red Sox 3-1. The Rays managed to make it to the World Series despite being the team that raised the second least amount of money on player salaries. Only the Florida Marlins invested less in their team.

It was the first time the Phillies had entered the Fall Classic since the 1993 World Series . They reached for the sixth time in their history for the highest title in professional baseball, which they could win in 1980 for the first and to date only time. The Phillies could only secure the title in the National League East on the penultimate day of the regular season. They won the Division Series of the National League ( NLDS ) against the Milwaukee Brewers with 3-1 games as well as the title of the National League ( NLCS ) with only one loss in the best-of-seven series against the LA Dodgers .
