The Tropicana Field is a multifunctional stadium with a closed roof in Saint Petersburg in the US state of Florida . It is the home of the Tampa Bay Rays , a major league baseball team in the American League . The stadium currently holds 36,048 spectators.
history
As early as the 1980s, the city of Saint Petersburg showed interest in a professional sports team and began building a new stadium in 1986. After trying unsuccessfully to move the Chicago White Sox and later the San Francisco Giants , when the stadium opened in 1993, no tenant had been found. In 1993 the NHL team Tampa Bay Lightning finally found a tenant who played there for three years. As a result, the stadium previously known as Suncoast Dome was renamed Thunderdome .
1995 you could sign a baseball team when the MLB was expanded. The naming rights were sold to Tropicana Products (since 1998 a fruit juice subsidiary of PepsiCo ) and in 1996 the stadium was renamed Tropicana Field.
2006 was Ted Williams Museum / Hitters Hall of Fame set at Tropicana Field after the original plant in Hernando in the bankruptcy went.
architecture
The building design was often criticized as unsuccessful with regard to the building use. The steel structure below the roof blocked balls several times and thus prevented regular home runs . The floodlight system, which is arranged in the shape of a ring under the roof, can also be a danger for the players if the glass over the field is broken if the ball is hit directly.
