Hernando is a census-designated place (CDP) in Citrus County in the US state of Florida with 9054 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
The CDP is crossed by US Highway 41 and Florida State Road 200 . It is located approximately 5 km north of Inverness and approximately 110 km north of Tampa .
history
In 1891 the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad opened a railway line from Inverness via Hernando and Dunnellon to Ocala .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 9,054 inhabitants were distributed over 5,425 households. The population density was 111.1 inh / km². 94.8% of the population identified themselves as whites, 2.2% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 0.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 3.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 47.9% of all households lived in 18.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 64.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.17 people and the average family size was 2.60 people.
16.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 14.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 41.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 54 years. 50.0% of the population were male and 50.0% were female.
The median annual income was $ 33,792, with 24.2% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 97.57% of the population and 2.43% had another mother tongue.

On May 4, 2001, the Old Hernando Elementary School was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
