Dunnellon is a city in Marion County in the US state of Florida with 1733 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Dunnellon is about 30 km southwest of Ocala . Orlando is 120 km, Tampa 150 km and Jacksonville 160 km away. In Dunnellon the Rainbow River flows into the Withlacoochee River . The Rainbow River rises a few kilometers north in Rainbow Springs State Park .

history

In 1887, the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad opened a railway line from Ocala to Dunnellon. An extension to Homosassa followed in 1888 and another branch to Inverness in 1891 . In 1914 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built a railway line from Dunnellon to Wilcox.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1733 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 1313 households. The population density was 94.7 inh / km². 88.1% of the population identified themselves as whites , 9.2% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 0.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.0% to several ethnic groups. 5.0% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 18.3% of all households and people aged 65 or over lived in 51.9% of all households. 53.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.97 people and the average family size was 2.64 people.

18.2% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 13.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 43.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 55 years. 46.0% of the population were male and 54.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 21,955, with 29.9% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 98.87% of the population and 1.13% spoke German .

On December 8, 1988, the Dunnellon Boomtown Historic District was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

The crime rate in 2010 was 166 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There was one robbery, five assaults, 20 break-ins and one theft.
