High Springs is a city in Alachua County in the US state of Florida with 5350 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

High Springs is located on the Santa Fe River , an eastern tributary of the Suwannee River , which flows into the Gulf of Mexico about 100 km southwest . The city borders on Alachua to the east , is about 30 km northwest of Gainesville and about 110 km southwest of Jacksonville .

history

In 1881, the Live Oak and Rowland's Bluff Railroad opened a railway line from Live Oak via High Springs to Gainesville , which was incorporated into the Plant System in 1884.

Religions

In High Springs there are currently 28 different churches from 11 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 6 churches. There are 7 churches that do not belong to any denomination (status: 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 5350 inhabitants were distributed over 2361 households. The population density was 111.9 inh / km². 82.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 13.8% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 1.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 6.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 27.2% of all households lived in 34.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 71.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.97.

26.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 56,628, with 16.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.35% of the population and Spanish spoke 3.65%.

Attractions

About six kilometers northwest of High Springs are the Ginnie Springs . These springs are considered to be one of the best freshwater cave dive sites in the United States. They are so easy to dive that even inexperienced divers can experience cave diving here.

On October 31, 1991, the High Springs Historic District was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

traffic

High Springs is crossed by US Highways 27 , 41 and 441 ( SR 25 ) and Florida State Road 20 . Interstate 75 also passes the city ​​to the east. The nearest airport is Gainesville Regional Airport (around 35 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 275 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were two rapes, two robberies, 19 assaults, 37 break-ins, 91 thefts, five car thefts and two arson attacks.
