Waldo is a city in Alachua County in the US state of Florida with 1015 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Waldo is about 15 km northeast of Gainesville and about 80 km southwest of Jacksonville .

history

Waldo was founded in 1820. The place received its first railway connection in 1859 through the Florida Railroad between Fernandina and Gainesville . In 1881 the subsidiary Peninsular Railroad opened a branch from Waldo to Ocala .

The Waldo station was from 1994 to 1995 and from 1996 to 2004 a station of the Amtrak's Palmetto from New York City to Tampa . Today, the section between Jacksonville and Lakeland is served by the Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach long-distance buses .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 1015 inhabitants were distributed over 489 households. The population density was 182.6 inh / km². 70.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 25.9% as African-Americans , 0.2% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 1.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 3.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 31.0% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 29.1% of all households. 59.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.45 people and the average family size was 3.10 people.

26.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 48.7% of the population were male and 51.3% were female.

The median annual income was $ 29,310, with 39.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 99.47% of the population and 0.53% spoke Spanish .

Attractions

On February 2, 2001, the Waldo Historic District was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Florida State Road 24 meets US Highway 301 in Waldo . The nearest airport is Gainesville Regional Airport (around 10 km southwest).
