Empresas Polar is a Venezuelan food company founded in 1941 . It is the second largest commercial enterprise after Petróleos de Venezuela , run as a family business in the third generation by Lorenzo Mendoza , the grandson of the founder of the same name.

The Hugo Chavez and Nicolás Maduro government has often come into conflict with Empresas Polar and even with their workers. Chavez had threatened several times to expropriate the company. However, their workers tend to earn considerably better than the average Venezuelan and have always resisted it. In April 2016, Polar had to temporarily stop beer production due to a lack of barley. The government did not give her the necessary import permit. President Maduro accused Polar against participating in the alleged economic war of the private sector against the socialist government. Production was resumed in early June thanks to a $ 35 million loan from the Spanish bank BBVA .

The three most important companies are:

  • Polar Brewery
  • Alimentos Polar
  • Pepsi Polar
