The Bremen School Museum is a school history collection in the Hastedt district of Bremen . It is the supporting association "School Museum of Bremen. V. “, which maintains a cooperation with the Senator for Children and Education. The museum is housed in the Auf der Hohwisch school.

history

In 1975/76 the Bremen School Act was reformed and it was decided to reduce the number of school locations in Bremen. The closure of around 25 old schools followed. In 1978, a large fund of school materials from the past 100 years was assembled for a special exhibition by the Senator for Education entitled "Schools then and now". Objects from this exhibition formed the basis for the school history collection, which was to preserve and document the evidence of Bremen's school history in the following years.

In 1983 the “Bremen School History Collection” (SGS) was officially opened in Bremen's only Art Nouveau school building “Auf der Hohwisch” in Hastedt. One year later, the association “Schulgeschichtliches Museum Bremen e. V. ”chaired by the state school board Mews. In the following years the collection developed more and more into a museum, the first permanent exhibition was presented in 1987. As a result, the school history collection became the "School Museum Bremen", which was reopened on September 10, 2009 after renovating the premises. In January 2009 the new sponsoring association Schulmuseum Bremen e. V. founded.

The building has been a listed building since 1984.

Museum and Collection

The Bremen school history collection comprises around 30,000 objects, photos and archive materials on various school topics from around 1880 to the present day. Anatomical models from natural history, astronomical and other physical teaching aids as well as around 6,000 school wall maps are part of the fund. From exhibition projects, for example, about childhood and youth in Bremen under National Socialism or the Bremen experimental schools from the Weimar period, further focus areas arose. The museum's permanent exhibition also includes two historical classrooms that can be used by school classes as part of museum education to get to know school lessons from around 1900. The children sit in old school desks , write on slates with pens and experience historical lessons on a journey through time.

The school history collection also includes a reference library with around 37,000 volumes that can be used for research work after registration.

Earth bunker

In 1996, an earth bunker from 1941 was discovered by chance during construction work under the schoolyard . Today it is the only preserved earth bunker in Bremen that is open to the public and belongs to the exhibition rooms of the Bremen School Museum. Two of the five bunker tubes were reconstructed according to contemporary witnesses, the other three were conserved as they were found during the construction work. In these three tubes, the subjects of “forced laborers and bunkers”, “school and bunkers” and “alarms and all-clear” are dealt with using photos and documents.
