School museums are institutions that show regional school history. Most of the exhibits (school desks, blackboards , school books, ...) from closed schools form the core of the exhibition - often combined with the offer to experience a historical school lesson as a pupil. Few museums also show an overview of excerpts from regional school history. Individual school museums (e.g. Friedrichshafen , Bremen , Hamburg and Leipzig ) also deal with the educational history of the school as well as groundbreaking and innovative school architecture (e.g. Tauberbischofsheim ).

history

In Germany, school museums first emerged in the second half of the 19th century and were closely associated with regional or municipal teachers' associations . From the insight that teaching had to be professionalized, materials were collected in the teachers' associations in order to make the lessons clear, especially since there was no teaching material industry at that time . This tradition was permanently interrupted by the First World War. The teachers' clubs were literally bled to death. Nevertheless, attempts were made during the Weimar period - with little success - to revive the tradition. The Second World War completely interrupted this tradition. After the war, school museums were set up to document the past eras of school history.

In 2000, the Austrian Society for Historical Education and School History (ÖGHPS) decided for the first time to create a virtual school museum.
