Micanopy is a city in Alachua County in the US state of Florida with 600 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The city is about 15 km south of Gainesville and about 120 km southwest of Jacksonville .

history

The city of Micanopy claims to be the oldest city in Florida. When the researcher William Bartram came to this area in 1774, there was already a settlement of the Seminole tribe on the site of the present city . The Indians called the place "Cuscowilla". Bartram's publications in the "old world" drew large numbers of European emigrants.

The first post office was opened in 1826. The city was named "Wanton" after the then prominent resident Edward M. Wanton , but the name Micanopy was also in use, derived from a Seminole chief. In 1831 a fort was built to protect the inhabitants, which was important during the Second Seminole War . The historical importance of the area was confirmed in 1983 by the National Register of Historic Places .

Micanole was the location of the films " Cross Creek " (1983) and " Doc Hollywood " (1991) with Michael J. Fox and Julie Warner .
