Hawthorne (also Hawthorn ) is a city in Alachua County in the US state of Florida with 1417 inhabitants (as of 2010).

The city is the birthplace of James Burrows Edwards , who was Governor of South Carolina from 1975 to 1979.

Hawthorne is about 20 km west of Gainesville and about 85 km south of Jacksonville .

history

The place received its first railway connection in the 1870s from the direction of Palatka . In 1881, the Peninsular Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , opened another route from Waldo via Hawthorne to Ocala .

Religions

In Hawthorne there are currently 14 different churches from 5 different denominations, of which the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 8 churches. There is one church that does not belong to any denomination (status: 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1417 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 681 households. The population density was 170.7 inh / km². 52.4% of the population identified themselves as whites , 45.2% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 0.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 2.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 31.9% of all households lived in 31.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 63.5% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.15.

25.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.0% were 60 years or older. The mean age was 42 years. 47.8% of the population were male and 52.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 38,900, with 26.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100% of the population.

On May 4, 2015, the Hawthorne Cemetery was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Hawthorne is crossed by US Highway 301 ( SR 200 ) and Florida State Road 20 . The nearest airport is Gainesville Regional Airport (around 25 km west).
