Fernandina Beach is a city and also the county seat of Nassau County in the US state of Florida with 11,487 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Fernandina Beach is the capital of Amelia Island , an island on the east coast of Florida just off the Georgia border . The St. Marys River , a border river between the two states, also flows into the Atlantic Ocean here . The city is about 25 miles north of Jacksonville .
history
The railroad age in Fernandina Beach began in 1858 with the construction of the Florida Railroad from here to Starke . The route was gradually extended and reached the Gulf of Mexico at Cedar Key in 1861 . The Fernandina Beach - Yulee section was subsequently operated by SAL , SSR and CSX , before being transferred to the newly established First Coast Railroad in 2005 .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 11,487 inhabitants were distributed over 7,030 households. The population density was 413.2 inh / km². 83.4% of the population identified themselves as white , 11.7% as African American , 0.4% as Native American and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 1.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 5.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 21.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 35.1% of all households. 62.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.18 people and the average family size was 2.65 people.
18.2% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 18.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 32.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 50 years. 47.3% of the population were male and 52.7% were female.
The median annual income was $ 53,838, with 14.1% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 96.20% of the population, 2.90% spoke Spanish and French spoke 0.90% .
