Callahan is a city in Nassau County in the US state of Florida with 1123 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Callahan is about 35 km west of Fernandina Beach and about 20 km northwest of Jacksonville .

history

The Callahan railroad era began in 1858 with the construction of the Florida Railroad between Fernandina and Starke . The place became an important railway junction when the East Florida Railway opened another route from Waycross ( Georgia ) to Jacksonville in 1881 , which merged into the Savannah, Florida & Western Railway in 1884 . Today freight traffic via Callahan is operated by CSX and passenger traffic by Amtrak (without stops).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 1123 inhabitants were distributed over 585 households. The population density was 330.3 inh / km². 89.3% of the population identified themselves as white , 7.0% as African American , 0.3% as Native American and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 1.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 2.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 36.8% of all households and people aged 65 and over in 25.3% of all households. 65.5% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.36 people and the average family size was 2.91 people.

28.6% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 28.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 47.0% of the population were male and 53.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 25,962, with 33.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 98.34% of the population and 1.66% spoke Spanish .

Callahan is crossed by US Highways 1 , 23 ( SR 15 , on a common route) and 301 . Florida State Road A1A also ends here from the south. The nearest airport is Jacksonville International Airport (around 20 km southeast).
