Yulee is a census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County in the US state of Florida with 11,491 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Yulee is 3 miles west of Fernandina Beach and 16 miles north of Jacksonville . The CDP is crossed by US Highway 17 and Florida State Road A1A .

history

The Yulee Railroad Age began in 1858 with the construction of the Florida Railroad from Fernandina Beach to Starke . The route was gradually extended and reached the Gulf of Mexico at Cedar Key in 1861 . Yulee became an important railway junction in 1881, when the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad opened the Jacksonville - Yulee section and finally an extension to Savannah ( Georgia ) in 1894 . Both railway lines subsequently went over to SAL , SSR and finally CSX . The Yulee - Fernandina Beach section was taken over in 2005 by the newly established First Coast Railroad .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 11,491 inhabitants were distributed over 4,905 households. The population density was 193.1 inh / km². 90.5% of the population identified themselves as white, 5.6% as African American , 0.4% as Native American and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 1.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 3.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 22.7% of all households lived in 34.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 73.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.63 people and the average family size was 3.02 people.

25.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 26.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 50.1% of the population were male and 49.9% were female.

The median annual income was $ 55,862, with 9.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 99.15% of the population and 0.85% spoke Spanish .
