history

The railroad age on Cedar Key began in 1861, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War . This year, the Florida Railroad's line from Fernandina via Gainesville was completed. During the war, the railway line was of strategic importance and was badly damaged in the course of the conflict. Due to the war damage, the Florida Railroad had to be sold and restructured several times. With the construction of the South Florida Railroad until 1884, the port of Tampa Cedar Key ran out of rank as an important transshipment port for overseas trade, which decreased the economic importance of the place. In 1932 the route between Archer and Cedar Key was closed and the route on Cedar Key was later converted to the Cedar Key Railroad Trestle Nature Trail .
