Amelia Island is the southernmost island of the Sea Islands , which run along the east coast of the USA from South Carolina to Florida . It is 21 km long and at its widest point about 6 km wide. North of the island is Cumberland Island . The island belongs to Nassau County in Florida. The towns of Fernandina Beach and Amelia City are both on the island.
The island is also known as the Isle of 8 Flags ("Island of the Eight Flags"). Since 1562 it has been under the flag of: France , Spain , Great Britain , Spain (again), Patriots of Amelia Island , Green Cross of Florida , Mexico , Confederate States of America , United States .
The tennis tournament " Bausch & Lomb Championships " of the WTA Tour took place on the island from 1975 to 2008 .
The island is named after the British Princess Amelie Sophie , daughter of George II .
