Cumberland Island is one of the Sea Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the US state Georgia . Cumberland Island is the westernmost point of the Atlantic coast of the United States. It is protected as a National Seashore .
The island is 17.5 mi (28 km) long and has an area of 56.25 mi² (146 km²), of which 16,850 acres (68 km²) are marshland , tidal flats and creeks . There is no bridge to the mainland; most visitors reach the island by ferry from St. Marys . It is named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland the son of King George II of England .
