With Sea Islands (Engl. "Sea Islands") is one of the North American mainland offshore island chain in the Atlantic Ocean off the southeastern coast of the United States designated. It consists mainly of tidal islands and sandbanks , a total of over 100 of these islands are counted. The chain of islands runs between the mouth of the Santee River and the St. Johns River in the states of South Carolina , Georgia and Florida . Historically, the islands are primarily known for the distinct Creole culture of the Gullah . The Sea Islands are currently developing very quickly into a recreational, leisure and residential area.
During the Civil War , the islands were occupied early by the navy and the army of the Union forces. The white population had fled to the mainland, while the Afro-American slaves stayed behind and organized themselves. This has always been widespread among the slaves on the islands, as the plantation owners lived mostly on the mainland to avoid isolation and infection with malaria. After President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation , the situation of slaves on the islands changed. The stationed officers explained the proclamation and the ensuing liberation from slavery . After the proclamation was ignored by the plantation owners, the effective release did not take effect until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution .
The island chain was badly hit by the Sea Islands Hurricane in 1893 .
