Tybee Island is an island in Chatham County , in the US state of Georgia , which is located near Savannah . The town of the same name on the island has 3,392 inhabitants, the whole island has a population of 3,713.

history

The 1736 lighthouse was commissioned by General James Oglethorpe.

A 3.5-ton Mark 15 hydrogen bomb ( Tybee bomb ) was lost near Tybee Island on February 5, 1958 . After a Boeing B-47 bomber collided with an F-86 in midair, the pilot had to drop the bomb in order to safely land the aircraft.

Historical objects

On Tybee is the historic Fort Screven Historic District . It was listed on May 25, 1982 on the National Register of Historic Places with number 82002393.
