The Marlins Park is a baseball stadium in Little Havana about three kilometers west of the center of the US city of Miami , Florida area. It is the home ground of the Miami Marlins from Major League Baseball (MLB). The stadium is located on the site of the former Orange Bowl Stadium . It is the sixth MLB stadium with a closable roof. The capacity of the Marlins Park is 36,742 spectators.
history
Since the founding of the Miami Marlins under the name Florida Marlins, the team has played at Sun Life Stadium, which was originally built for American football games. Even several conversions could not turn the football stadium into a multifunctional stadium. At the end of the 1990s, the idea of building a pure baseball stadium with a closable roof came up. After the Marlins won the World Series in 2003 , Miami-Dade County officials presented plans for the new stadium, which should be on the site of the Orange Bowl Stadium.
The new stadium was controversial from the start because of city and county funding and was the subject of the 2009 election campaign for the post of Mayor of the City of Miami. After several legal disputes, construction began in July 2009, and the stadium was opened just under three years later in March 2012. The construction costs of 634 million US dollars were financed 59.35% by Miami-Dade County, 20.89% by the City of Miami and 19.76% by the Miami Marlins.
Before the official opening against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 4, 2012, some games were already held as part of the preparation. The first game was played on March 5th between Christopher Columbus High School and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. On March 6, the Marlins played a show game against the Miami Hurricanes (7-6 win for the Marlins) and on March 7th against the FIU Golden Panthers (5-1 for the Marlins). Likewise, on April 1 and 2, two spring training games were played against the New York Yankees .
As one of eight stadiums in the 2013 World Baseball Classic , the Group 2 round 2 games were played in Marlins Park.
On February 13, 2015, the MLB announced in the person of Commissioner Rob Manfred that the All-Star Weekend 2017 with the MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 11 in Marlins Park in Miami. Miami is the first to host the event for the 88th edition of the MLB All-Star Game.
