The Nationals Park is a baseball stadium in the US capital Washington, DC It is the home ground of the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball (MLB). The baseball franchise of the National League plays its games at Nationals Park in 2008.

history

The team of the Montreal Expos was the 2005 Canadian Montreal with the Olympic Stadium moved to the capital Washington, DC. Since a stadium for the team was still in the planning phase, the Washington Nationals were temporarily located in the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium from 1961 from 2005 to 2007 .

A 26 acre (105,218 m²) lot in southeast Washington in the Navy Yard district, near the banks of the Anacostia River , was selected as the location for the new building  . Navy Yard was used as an industrial area until restructuring began in the 1990s. Today, the United States Department of Transportation's headquarters are in Navy Yard. Not far from the construction site of the stadium stands since 2018 on the peninsula Buzzard Point the Audi Field , the new football stadium of DC United from Major League Soccer (MLS). The architects HOK Sport (today: Populous ) and Devrouax & Purnell Architects and Planners were responsible for the design of the new baseball park.

The financing should be secured by a bank consortium led by Deutsche Bank . The project was delayed by extensive negotiations between the city administration, the MLB and the consortium. The banks required a letter of credit or a comparable financial guarantee in addition to the viewer income in order to cover risks such as lack of viewers or terrorist attacks. The total was $ 24 million. In the end, an agreement was reached and nothing stood in the way of the start of construction. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 4, 2006. Nationals Park was officially opened on March 30, 2008. It was the first LEED certified “green” stadium in professional sports in the United States. In the end, the construction cost 693 million US dollars .
