The SunTrust Park is a baseball - stadium in the metropolitan Atlanta . It is located in Cumberland in Cobb County , approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of downtown Atlanta. It's the home of the Atlanta Braves , the city's MLB team . It replaced Turner Field as the venue for the Braves .

On November 11, 2013, the Braves announced that they would be leaving their pitch for a new stadium after the 2016 season . The Braves have been playing their home games in SunTrust Park since April 2017.

history

The new stadium was built in a public-private partnership (PPP) with a project budget of US $ 622 million . Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority has issued up to $ 397 million in bonds for the project. The district raised $ 368 million through bonds, $ 14 million through transportation taxes, and $ 10 million from businesses in the Cumberland Community Improvement District. The Braves contributed the remaining money for the park and the Battery Atlanta (area around the stadium with shops, etc.). In total, the project cost $ 1.1 billion.

The Braves played a preseason game against the New York Yankees on March 31, 2017 as a soft opening for season ticket holders. The first game of the regular season at SunTrust Park took place on April 14, 2017, a 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres .
