The outside of the stadium

The Minute Maid Park is a baseball stadium in Houston in the US state of Texas . It is the home of the Houston Astros , a major league baseball team in the American League . The stadium currently holds 41,574 spectators and has a closable roof.

history

The stadium replaced the Astrodome , which was the home of the Astros until then. As an innovation, the Minute Maid Park has a sliding roof, which also allows games to be played in the open air. Originally, the naming rights were sold to Enron in a 30-year contract for $ 100 million . When the energy company went bankrupt soon afterwards in the wake of a major corporate scandal, management bought back the naming rights for 2.1 million US dollars. Unofficially, the stadium was then referred to as "The Field Formerly Known As Enron". On June 5, 2002, the naming rights for the next 28 years could finally be sold to Minute Maid , a fruit juice subsidiary of Coca-Cola , for a price of over 100 million US dollars.

In the 2004 season, Wi-Fi reception was set up in the stadium. This provides viewers with paid internet access during the game.

Events

The MLB All-Star Game of the 2004 season was played in Minute Maid Park.

On October 25, 2005, a World Series game was played for the first time in Texas in Minute Maid Park . It was also the longest final game ever played in the history of the World Series. After 14 innings and 5 hours and 41 minutes of play, the Astros lost to the Chicago White Sox 5-7.

Madonna gave a concert here on November 16, 2008 in front of 41,498 spectators as part of her Sticky & Sweet Tour . It was her first Houston appearance in 18 years.

On January 26, 2020 here the wrestling event is the Royal Rumble the WWE instead.

particularities

In the middle outfield there was a small hill ("Tal's Hill") that was part of the playing field. Many a ball hit him caused a failed back pass, as the roll curve of the ball off the hill was very difficult to calculate.
