The T-Mobile Park is a baseball stadium in the US city of Seattle in the US state of Washington . It is the home ground of the Seattle Mariners , a Major League Baseball (MLB) baseball team .
history
It was opened after two years of construction on July 15, 1999 with the Mariners' game against the San Diego Padres . Safeco Field serves the team as the successor to the Kingdome , a stadium with a closed domed roof that was directly north of the new stadium until 2000. The facility has a capacity of 47,934 spectators (excluding seats) and a closable roof. Total construction costs at the time of opening were $ 517.6 million, making Safeco Field the most expensive ballpark in the world at the time.
In 2003, Safeco Field hosted Wrestlemania XIX .
Surname
From 1999 to the end of 2018, the baseball stadium was named Safeco Field after a 20-year contract with Seattle-based insurance company Safeco Insurance . The insurer refused to extend the agreement in 2017. On December 19, 2018, a new namesake was found for 25 years and six million US dollars annually. The stadium's name sponsor has been T-Mobile US , the third-largest cellular provider in the United States , since January 1, 2019 .
