The Washington Times is an American daily newspaper with publication Washington, DC

The Washington Times Newsroom (2008)

It was founded in 1982 by Sun Myung Moon and other members of the Unification Church as a conservative alternative to the Washington Post . In 2012 their circulation was 59,185 copies.

Motivation for founding and operating

The Times is a News World Communications publication described by the Columbia Journalism Review as the "Media Arm of Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church." The Washington Post had been one of the main critics of Moon's conservative anti-communism in the early 1980s and was the only daily newspaper in the US capital after the Washington Star went bankrupt . Moon saw the utility of the media in serving his church, as he later stated in December 2000: “We must use the media ourselves for the development of the church. The church is the spirit and the media is the body to reach the outside world. We should start this movement and activity in the United States because that's where the Washington Times and UPI are headquartered. Once we have established our organization in the United States, it can be extended to the world without much change. "

By 2006, the publishing house had in losses of three billion US dollar suffered to the conservative message of the Times to spread - losses which were replaced by the Unification Church in the form of subsidies.

Political tendency

The Times is generally classified as politically conservative. Along with Fox News Channel and Talkradio , it is exemplary of the conservative media in the United States.

According to the newspaper's founder, it should fight communism and become a conservative alternative to what he sees as the overly liberal / socially liberal Washington Post . The former editor-in-chief of the Washington Times (1992-2008), Wesley Pruden, classifies the newspaper as conservative in the selection of stories and in the editorial, but does not aim to write conservative stories directly.

The newspaper's credibility has often been questioned. Salon.com and The Daily Howler , for example, have published analyzes of articles in which they accuse the newspaper of serious errors. Former Washington Times conservative journalist and media critic David Brock wrote that journalistic ethics were virtually non-existent in the Washington Times . On the other hand, the newspaper received some praise from the conservative side; for example, in 1997 Ronald Reagan said that thanks to the Washington Times, Americans knew the truth.
