background
Participating teams
When the NHL Winter Classic 2011 was awarded ( Pittsburgh Penguins versus Washington Capitals in Pittsburgh ), Gary Bettman , Commissioner of the NHL, promised that the Capitals would host a Winter Classic within the next two to three years. This period was extended by one year through the lockout of the 2012/13 season, as the Detroit Red Wings could only host their NHL Winter Classic in 2014 instead of 2013. In September 2013, the award to Washington, DC was officially announced.
In June 2014, as part of the publication of the 2014/15 season schedule , the Chicago Blackhawks were announced as opponents of the Capitals. This is the second participation in an NHL Winter Classic for both the Capitals ( 2011 against the Pittsburgh Penguins) and the Blackhawks ( 2009 against the Detroit Red Wings).
In addition, this is the first pairing of a Winter Classics that is not viewed as a classic rivalry between two NHL teams.
Venue
FedExField , Nationals Park , Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and Oriole Park at Camden Yards were shortlisted for the venue . Here, the Nationals was Park, where usually Baseball team the Washington Nationals play their games, confirmed from the start as favorite and was established in September 2014 as a venue.
Sporty starting situation
Before the game, the Chicago Blackhawks had played 37 and the Washington Capitals 36 games. The Blackhawks led the Central Division and were in second place in the league table (behind the Anaheim Ducks ). Chicago also had the best goal difference with +37 and the best defense with 78 goals conceded (together with Nashville ). The Washington Capitals, however, were only 4th in the Metropolitan Division and 17th in the entire league.
Both teams faced each other once in the regular season. On November 7, 2014, the Capitals achieved a 3-2 away win in Chicago.
