Michael Latta (born May 25, 1991 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with Kunlun Red Star in the Continental Hockey League .
Career
Michael Latta was born in Kitchener and grew up in nearby St. Clements . In his youth he played for the Waterloo Wolves in Waterloo before he was selected in the 2007 Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in sixth position by the Ottawa 67’s . In its first year in one of Canada's top three junior leagues , the center scored 28 points in 50 games; he should also have participated in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2008, but missed the tournament due to illness. After completing only 23 games in his second season at the 67's, he was transferred to the Guelph Storm in November 2008 , who in return sent Anthony Nigro , Travis Gibbons and a second-round vote for the next year's Priority Selection to Ottawa. Latta pushed for this move to be closer to his family, so Ottawa is over a five-hour drive away, while Guelph is less than 50 kilometers away.
By the end of the season, the Canadian scored 36 points in Guelph and was selected in the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2009 in 72nd position by the Nashville Predators . Previously, he was part of the squad for the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game . He increased his performance significantly when he posted well over one point per game the following year (73 in 58 games). Because of this, the Milwaukee Admirals , the farm team of the Predators from the American Hockey League (AHL), appointed him to their playoff squad, so that he made his professional debut at the end of the season. For the time being, it stayed with this one mission, which should only follow a total of eleven in the following season 2011/12; the rest of the season he continued to spend in the OHL.
At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, Latta was an integral part of the Admirals' squad and completed 67 missions in the AHL. In April 2013 he was then transferred to the Washington Capitals together with Martin Erat , who in return gave Filip Forsberg to the Predators. As a result, the attacker spent the rest of the AHL season with the Hershey Bears , the Capitals' farm team.
He spent the 2013/14 season alternating between the NHL and AHL, with 17 appearances for the Capitals in the end. After his contract was extended by two years in the summer of 2014, Latta established himself in the squad of the Capitals and has since played exclusively in the National Hockey League. After the 2015/16 season, Latta did not get a new contract in Washington and subsequently joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in July 2016 . There he was only used in the Ontario Reign in the AHL and finally handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks in January 2017 in exchange for Cameron Schilling . He ended the season with their farm team, the Rockford IceHogs , and received no further contract from the Blackhawks after the end of the season. As a result, Latta joined the Arizona Coyotes as a free agent in July 2017 . There it was used exclusively for the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL, before being given to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Ryan Kujawinski in December 2017 .
In the summer of 2018, Latta left North America for the first time and joined Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). For Kunlun he scored 15 points scorer in 51 KHL games.
