David Johnny Oduya (born October 1, 1981 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League until July 2018 and played for them in the position of defender .
Career
Oduya is the son of a Swede, his father comes from Kenya . The 1.82 m tall defender played in his youth for the Swedish club Hammarby IF , for whose first team he was on the ice for the first time in the third division in the 1999/00 season . The left shooter then moved to North America, where he played a season for the Moncton Wildcats and the Tigres de Victoriaville in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Oduya was finally selected as 221st in the seventh round by the Washington Capitals .
First the Swede returned to Hammarby and finally switched to the first-class Elitserien at Djurgårdens IF in 2003 . When Oduya still had no offer from the Capitals four years after the draft, he joined Frölunda HC , for which he was again on the ice for a season in the Elitserien. For the 2006/07 season , the defender finally signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils , where he secured a place in the NHL squad after the loss of some regulars.
On February 4, 2010 Oduya was transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers along with Niclas Bergfors , Patrice Cormier and a first-round suffrage in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , while in return Ilya Kowaltschuk and Anssi Salmela came to the Devils. In addition, the teams also exchanged their voting rights in the second round of the same draft.
On February 27, 2012, the Winnipeg Jets gave him in exchange for a second-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks . In Chicago, Oduya won the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015 , before joining the Dallas Stars as a free agent in July 2015 . There the defender committed himself for two years. Shortly before the end of the contract, he returned to Chicago in February 2017 in exchange for Mark McNeill and a conditional four-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In July 2017, after his contract expired as a free agent , he was hired by the Ottawa Senators for a period of one year.
The Senators put the defender on the waiver list in February 2018 , from which he was subsequently signed by the Philadelphia Flyers . There he ended the 2017/18 season, but did not receive a further contract from the Flyers.
