The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), headquartered in Washington, DC, is an independent United States agency that regulates the futures and options markets in the United States.

According to The Commodity Exchange Act (CEA), 7 USC § 1 ff., The CFTC has the task of protecting trading partners against manipulation , abusive trading practices and fraud. It is supposed to supervise and regulate markets that fulfill economically important tasks.

In spring 2010 the CFTC held a hearing on the question of whether and how the prices of gold and silver had been influenced or manipulated. The reason for this hearing was information that had become known through the whistleblower Andrew Maguire at the end of 2009.
