Anssi Salmela (born August 13, 1984 in Nokia ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHC Biel in the National League since June 2018 .

Career

Anssi Salmela began his career as an ice hockey player in his Finnish homeland at Tappara Tampere , for which he played in the SM-liiga from 2003 to 2005 . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season , the defender was given to their league rivals Pelicans Lahti , for whom he was active the following two seasons before he played again for Tampere in the 2007/08 season , with whom he won the bronze medal in that year SM-liiga won.

Before the 2008/09 season Salmela received a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils , for their NHL team and their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Lowell Devils . The defender made his debut in the National Hockey League for New Jersey on October 10, 2008 in the first game of the season in a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders .

On March 2, 2009 Salmela was transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for the Swede Niclas Haevelid , for whom he scored his first goal in the NHL on March 16, 2009 in his only second game for Atlanta. Salmela returned to the New Jersey Devils on February 4, 2010 when the Thrashers traded him along with Ilya Kowaltschuk for Johnny Oduya , Niclas Bergfors , Patrice Cormier and a draft pick for the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft .

On July 15, 2011 Salmela signed a two-year contract with HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League . After this contract expired, he moved within the KHL to HK Donbass Donetsk , but was dismissed without notice shortly before the start of the season in September 2013. At the end of the same month he received a short-term contract with MODO Hockey , for which he completed eight games before moving to HV71 . In the 2014/15 season , the Finn played for Färjestad BK before joining league rivals Brynäs IF in the summer of 2015 .

From Sweden it went on to China: Salmela started the 2016/17 season with Kunlun Red Star and was part of the first team of the Chinese club in its first KHL season . In November 2016 they separated "by mutual agreement". Then he was under contract with Linköpings HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan .

From September 2017 he was under contract with Dinamo Riga in the Continental Hockey League and was the best defender in the team there before he was signed by EHC Biel in June 2018 .

International

For Finland Salmela took part in the 2004 Junior World Championship and the 2008 and 2009 A World Championship . In the first two tournaments he won the bronze medal with his team.
