Martin Steinegger (born February 15, 1972 in Biel ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player who played 1025 games in the National League A for EHC Biel and SC Bern between 1990 and 2012 .

Career

Steinegger remained loyal to his junior club EHC Biel until his relegation to the National League B in 1995. From the 1995/96 season to the 2007/08 season he played for SC Bern , with whom he became Swiss champions in 1997 and 2004 .

After SC Bern's elimination as the qualifying winner of the 2007/08 season in the first round of the playoffs against Friborg-Gottéron , Steinegger's contract was terminated at his own request. He then returned to his home club, the NLA promoted EHC Biel.

On September 27, 2011, Steinegger completed his 1000th NLA game. This makes him the second player after Gil Montandon to surpass this mark.

Steinegger has been head of sport at EHC Biel since March 2012.

International

For Switzerland , Steinegger took part in the U20 Junior World Championship in 1992 and the B World Championship in 1997 . He was also part of the Swiss squad at the A-World Championships in 1993 , 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2006 and 2007 , as well as the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . With a total of 219 internationals for Switzerland, Steinegger was at times the record player for his country.
