The 2020/21 season was the fourth regular event after the renaming of the former Swiss National League A to the National League , the top ice hockey division in Switzerland . The regular season consisted of 52 games and subsequent playoffs or pre-playoffs.

mode

The twelve teams played two double rounds of 22 games each. There were also six additional encounters per team against three opponents, which were based on a regional division (east: HC Ambrì-Piotta, HC Lugano, HC Davos, SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, center: EHC Biel, SCL Tigers, EV Zug, ZSC Lions , West: Genève-Servette HC, Lausanne HC, HC Friborg-Gottéron, SC Bern). In addition, two solidarity games were played this season; In total, each team should play 52 qualifying games.

The best six teams qualified directly for the playoffs. The teams in places seven to ten contested the pre-playoffs. It was played in the best-of-three between the teams in places 7 and 10 or 8 and 9 for the remaining two places in the playoffs. Then these eight teams determined the Swiss champions in the knockout system . The playoff quarter-finals were played in best-of-seven mode , half-finals and final in best-of-five mode.

The last two teams had the end of the season. This season there was no relegation to the Swiss League . Including the newcomer HC Ajoie , the next season will be played with 13 teams.

qualification

table

The league meeting decided on March 9th that the qualification definitely had to end on April 5th. Since both EHC Biel and SC Bern had to be in quarantine shortly before the end of qualification, not all teams were able to contest 52 rounds. As a result, the points per game were counted instead of the absolute points.

Explanations: Playoff qualification , pre-playoff qualification , end of season (no relegation 2020/21)
