Niklas Schlegel (born August 3, 1994 in Zurich ) is a Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper who is also a Canadian citizen . He has been under contract with HC Lugano from the National League (NL) since December 2019 .

Player career

Schlegel grew up in Bachenbülach and Neerach , at the age of twelve he moved from EHC Bülach to the youth department of Zürcher SC. There he was significantly shaped by goalkeeping coach Markus Peter. He developed into a junior national player and made his debut in the support team of the ZSC, the GC Küsnacht Lions , in the National League B (NLB) during the 2011/12 season . He was first used by the ZSC Lions in the top division, the National League A (NLA), in October 2014. In the 2015/16 season, the Zurich goalkeeper Lukas Flüeler was out for weeks, Schlegel used the opportunity to emphatically prove his NLA suitability and to make a name for himself. With the Lions, he finished the main round (“qualification”) of that season as first in the table and in spring 2016 won the Swiss Cup.

For the 2019/20 season he moved to SC Bern , but left Bern in December 2019 and moved to HC Lugano with immediate effect . He signed his contract with the Ticino until the end of the 2020/21 season.

National team

Schlegel received his first squad for the men's senior national team in March 2017.

Personal

Schlegel's father, Tom, is from Canada, grew up in Toronto and was also an ice hockey goalkeeper. He played for Kloten, Küsnacht and Schaffhausen, among others, and became goalkeeping coach after the end of his playing career. In this role he worked temporarily for the ZSC Lions. Niklas' sister Jessica plays for the ZSC women's team and for the U18 national team.
