Way to Bodhi (Sanskrit Bodhi, enlightenment, knowledge, awakening), WTB for short , is a German metal band from Stuttgart . The four band members, who come from different parts of southern Germany, only call each other by their nicknames and hide their faces behind white (half) masks at concerts in order to remain anonymous. Way to Bodhi holds the record as the deepest playing band in the world.

history

The band was formed in 2011. Way to Bodhi went on tour the following year and played over 20 concerts throughout Germany, including in Stuttgart, Cologne, Mönchengladbach, Aachen and Würzburg. This was followed by a longer period in the studio, where the first album was recorded. The time in the studio was marked by several line-up changes in the group and lengthy experiments on their sound. In 2014 the Winnender label 7us / 7hard became aware of WTB and signed them. The debut album eyed and spied was finally released in 2015 and contains 13 songs with a playing time of 50:26 minutes.

style

Way to Bodhi experiments with various sounds. Among other things, guitar and bass were tuned lower and lower, and the band also added electronically generated sounds to their music. Guitar and bass sometimes produce sounds and harmonies that are completely outside of the previously known guitar sounds. Both instruments are only transmitted live by amplifiers, so they achieve their depth without technical aids such as octavers. The style of the band contains elements of various metal subgenres, for example death metal , industrial , djent and sludge - extended by electronic influences from various directions of electro.

Because of the infrasound frequencies of their bass, Way to Bodhi sometimes refers to their style as "Subsonic Metal".

World record

Way to Bodhi plays with specially developed instruments and hand-wound strings. The band's four-string electric bass is a full octave below a conventional five-string electric bass, intonated an B with a fundamental at 15.4 Hertz. In May 2015, Way to Bodhi had this lowest keynote confirmed at the Physics Institute of the University of Stuttgart . The precisely measured frequency was 15.22 Hertz, i.e. just under an H at 15.4 Hertz. The record institute for Germany recognized the record attempt and awarded Way to Bodhi the title of “the deepest playing band in the world”.

reception

The style of the band has been a topic in the past several times in relevant specialist magazines and online portals such as Metal Hammer , Rock Hard , Metal.de , Metalglory.de , Wacken-Radio and EMP , but also in the local and regional press and even in Deutschlandfunk . The reviews of the debut album were mixed to benevolent. EMP wrote: “... therefore WAY TO BODHI is not just about hearing, but also about feeling. The mix of Meshuggah, Slipknot and Fear Factory is pleasing and makes the album a very special experience. ”The online portal Metal-Glory:“ Here you can get it deep into the pit of your stomach, without compromise ”. Rock Hard, on the other hand, named it “Ass Bomb of the Month”, the worst album of the month.
