Sami Hannu Antero Kapanen (born June 14, 1973 in Vantaa ) is a Finnish ice hockey coach, official and former player who was active in the National Hockey League for the Hartford Whalers , Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers . In Finland he played for KalPa Kuopio , of which he is co-owner.

Career

Kapanen started his career in his home country in 1990 with Kalevan Pallo in the SM-liiga and played there until 1994 . Then he moved to the Finnish club HIFK from Helsinki .

At the 1994 Winter Olympics Kapanen played for the Finnish national team and won the bronze medal with it.

In the 1995 NHL Entry Draft , Kapanen was selected in the fourth round as 87th by the Hartford Whalers . His first NHL season was 1995-96, in which he played 35 games for the Whalers. In 1997, the Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes , for which Kapanen ran for six seasons.

At the 1998 Winter Olympics , Kapanen returned to the Finnish national team and won another bronze medal.

He also took part in the 2002 Winter Olympics with Finland. This time it was only enough for a sixth place.

On February 7, 2003 Kapanen was exchanged with Ryan Bast for Pavel Brendl and Bruno St. Jacques from the Philadelphia Flyers . In Philadelphia he could not continue the good performance he showed in Carolina.

During the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season he played again for the Finnish team KalPa, this time in the Mestis . After the lockout ended, Kapanen returned to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Kapanen played for KalPa between 2008 and 2014 before ending his career in 2014.

As early as 2003, he became the owner of the KalPa club, where he also worked as a youth coach in the 2015/16 season, as an assistant coach in the following season and as head coach of the professional team from 2017 to 2019. In December 2018 he led the team to win the Spengler Cup in Davos . At the beginning of April 2019 he signed a contract as coach of the Swiss team HC Lugano .
