Paul Edward Postma (born February 22, 1989 in Red Deer , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Lugano from the National League since November 2019 and plays there in the position of defender .
Career
Acting on the position of defender Paul Postma was initially active for a lower class Canadian junior team before he gained his first experience with the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League during the 2004/05 season . In the following season, his first full season in the Broncos jersey, the Canadian earned a regular place in defense and was used in 58 regular time games. In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the seventh round in a total of 205th position by the Atlanta Thrashers . Shortly after the start of the 2007/08 season , the Swift Current Broncos transferred him to the Calgary Hitmen . There, the right-handed shooter managed to double his point yield in the two years of play in the dress of the Calgary Hitmen, from 42 to 84 points scorer in the 2008/09 season . As a result, Postma was the defender with the highest points in the Western Hockey League and also won the WHL Plus-Minus Award with a plus / minus balance of +67 . With the Calgary Hitmen he reached the final of the WHL championship, but failed in the series in six games against the Kelowna Rockets . He was also nominated for the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the league.
At the end of the season, his achievements were recognized with several appointments to the all-star teams of the Western Hockey League and the umbrella organization Canadian Hockey League . After signing a three-year entry - level contract with the Atlanta Thrashers, Postma was used for the first time in the following season 2009/10 with their farm team , the Chicago Wolves , in the American Hockey League , where he quickly established himself in his preferred role as an offensive defender. On March 9, 2011, he made his debut for the Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League , when the Canadian ran up in the game against the Carolina Hurricanes . After their relocation to Winnipeg and the renaming of the franchise to Winnipeg Jets in June 2011, Postma ran on the ice for both their new farm team, the St. John's IceCaps , and the Winnipeg Jets. It was only in the course of the 2012/13 season that he managed to firmly establish himself in the NHL squad of the Jets.
After a total of eight years in the Thrashers / Jets franchise , Postma joined the Boston Bruins after his contract expired in July 2017 . There he fulfilled a one-year contract, which was not extended in the summer of 2018. Then the defender moved to Europe for the first time by signing a one-year contract with Ak Bars Kazan from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). In the 2018/19 season , Postma showed improved offensive performances, scoring 8 goals and 20 assists in 57 games. On May 1, 2019, he signed a one-year contract with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk , but was released in October of the same year. In November 2019, he signed a contract with HC Lugano with play in the National League until the end of the 2019/20 season .
