Linus Karl Heimer Omark (born February 5, 1987 in Övertorneå ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Genève-Servette HC in the Swiss National League since June 2020 and plays there in the position of left winger .
Career
Omark, who was born and grew up in Övertorneå in northern Sweden , joined the top club Luleå HF as a teenager , one of the few clubs not based in the south of the country. There Omark played between 2003 and 2006 both with the U18 juniors in the second class Allsvenskan and the U20 juniors in the first class Elitserien . After he had mainly played in the U18 team in the 2003/04 season, he was already regularly used in the U20 team from 2004 - at the age of 17. During the 2005/06 season , the winger finally made his senior team debut in the Elitserien.
The striker was used in the 2005/06 season in 19 main round games and three playoff games in which he managed a goal preparation. He was able to increase this yield significantly in the 2006/07 game year when he scored 17 points scorer in 50 matches . His positive development resulted in him the Edmonton Oilers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft selected in the fourth round at a total of 97 out. However, the Swede stayed in his homeland and increased his offensive yield in the following two seasons. After Omark had scored 32 points in the 2007/08 season and had almost doubled its previous year's production, he increased again in the 2008/09 season when he got 55 points in just 53 games. He was also able to contribute five more assists in five playoff games . With 55 points in the main round, he was the third best scorer in the league behind the Norwegian Per-Åge Skrøder and his compatriot Fredrik Bremberg . Since his contract with Luleå had expired at the end of the season, the Edmonton Oilers tried hard to commit their draft election from 2007. Omark, however, opted for a two-year contract worth 2.6 million US dollars with the traditional Russian club HK Dynamo Moscow . His team-mate Johan Harju signed there on the same day . However, the contract had a release clause that made it possible for Omark to switch to a corresponding offer from the Oilers from the National Hockey League after the first year, which happened in the summer of 2010. He played his first game for the Oilers on December 10, 2010 against Tampa Bay and scored the highly regarded winner in the decisive shootout. Over the entire season he finally prevailed in the NHL, scoring five goals and 22 assists in a total of 51 games for Edmonton.
After Omark was deported to the Oklahoma City Barons in the American Hockey League during the 2011/12 season , he signed a one-year contract with EV Zug from the Swiss National League A in August 2012 . There he quickly became a star of the league and ended the 2012/13 season as the top scorer with 69 points. Omark was particularly effective in interaction with Damien Brunner . For the 2013-14 season he returned to the Edmonton Oilers, but played only one NHL game before he was again ordered to the Oklahoma City Barons. There he was the team's top scorer with 29 points after 28 games.
On December 19, 2013, Omark was given to the Buffalo Sabers for a six- round vote in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft . But even with the Sabers he could not prevail. When he refused to play for Rochester Americans in February 2014 , he was fired from his contract and returned to his home club. He played 11 games for Luleå HF until the end of the season before he was signed by KHL newcomer Jokerit . For Jokerit he came to 55 points scorer in 70 KHL games.
After a year at Jokerit, he moved to Salawat Julajew Ufa within the KHL in May 2015 . At Salawat he was top scorer and service provider in the following years, took part in the KHL All-Star Game several times and was twice named Player of the Week by the KHL . In June 2020, the now 33-year-old winger was signed by Genève-Servette HC for two years. Omark is considered one of the best scorers outside of the NHL.
International
At the international level, Omark represented his home country Sweden for the first time at the 2007 Junior World Cup in his own country. After defeats in the semi-finals and in the game for third place, he finished fourth with the team and thus remained without a medal. However, alongside Nicklas Bäckström and Niklas Hjalmarsson, the coaches named him one of the three best Swedish players of the tournament.
In the senior category, the winger was appointed to the Tre Kronor squad for the 2009 World Cup in Switzerland . As part of the preparatory games for the tournament, Omark caused a worldwide sensation in the ice hockey scene at the end of March when he scored the decisive goal in the penalty shoot-out with a lob over goalkeeper Marco Bührer in a game against host Switzerland . The striker was also able to excel in the world title fights with five assists in the first group game. In the end, he won the bronze medal with the team and was the second best point collector of his team with ten points.
