Damien Brunner (born March 9, 1986 ) is a Swiss ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHC Biel in the National League since May 2018 . He previously played for the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League .
Career
Damien Brunner began his career with the youngsters at EHC Kloten. Between 2002 and 2006 he played their elite A-Juniors. During the 2005/06 season he was also used by the partner team, EHC Winterthur from the first division . During the following season Brunner made his debut in the National League A with the Kloten Flyers . During the 2008/09 season he switched to EV Zug in exchange for Thomas Walser . In the 2009/10 season Brunner was the fourth best scorer in the championship.
The attacker ended the 2011/12 season with 60 points as the most successful points collector in the league, making him the first Swiss player in 30 years to do so. Previously, Guido Lindemann was the last time a Swiss player finished the season as the best point player in the league in the 1981/82 season.
In July 2012, Brunner signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings . For the duration of the NHL lockout in the 2012/13 season, however, he initially returned to Zug. After the end of the NHL lockout, he was able to fight for a regular place with the Red Wings immediately. His first goal for Detroit contributed Brunner on January 22, 2013 in a 1: 2 defeat against the Dallas Stars . On February 24, 2013 in the 8-3 win against the Vancouver Canucks , Brunner was the first Swiss to be credited with four scorer points in an NHL game (two goals and two assists). On September 24, 2013 the signing of a contract with the New Jersey Devils was announced after Brunner was able to convince in the training camp.
In December 2014 Brunner signed a contract with HC Lugano until the end of the 2018/19 season and returned to the NLA after almost two years. In May 2018, the attacker joined EHC Biel , with which he signed a contract until 2020.
International
Brunner first took part in the 2010 World Cup in Germany with the Swiss national ice hockey team. He took fifth place with the team. In seven games he scored one goal and prepared four more. In 2012 he again took part in the World Cup, where he was named the best Swiss player and top scorer of the team with seven points .
