Kombo South is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of nine districts in the West Coast Region .

According to a calculation from 2013 about 88,037 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 62,531.

The name is derived from Kombo , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at the time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around six tenths, followed by the Jola and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 57.2% Mandinka , 7.8% Fula , 2.8% Wolof , 21.5% Jola , 0.6% Serahule , 3.3% Serer , 0% Aku , 5.7% Manjago , 0.3% Bambara and 0.9% other races.
