Kombo (spelling variant Combo ) was a small empire in what is now the West African state of Gambia , at the mouth of the Gambia River .

Today's Kombo Central , Kombo East , Kombo North and Kombo South districts in the West Coast Region refer to this realm. Summarizing the districts, the Kombo region is still used today.

It was bordered north by the river and west by the Atlantic Ocean , south by the Elinkin Empire on the Casamance River, and east by the Foni Empire . The land is flat and covered with mangrove forest on the banks of the Gambia .

history

In the 19th century, Kombo was one of nine Mandinka kingdoms on the southern bank of the Gambia and controlled the confluence of the river with the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1816 the ruler of Kombo sold St. Mary's Island to Captain Alexander Grant to set up a British base there. The whole country was later sold to the British in July 1840, December 1950 and May 1953, which they called British Kombo from then on . British Kombo was later renamed Kombo-St. Mary Area ( also Kombo St. Mary ) renamed, the region is still known by this name today.
