Foni (spelling variants: Fogni , Fogny or Fooñi ) was a historical empire in the West African state of Gambia .

history

The empire was one of the nine Mandinka empires on the south bank of the Gambia River in the early 19th century . It stretched south from the mouth of the Bintang Bolong , which separates the empire from the empire Kiang . To the west was the Kombo empire . As today, Foni was home to a large number of members of the Diola ethnic group .

The place Bintang was an important port along Bintang Bolong, where Europeans operated commercially.

In the 20th century, the British organized the protectorate into six districts: Foni Brefet , Foni Bintang-Karanai , Foni Kansala , Foni Bondali and Foni Jarrol . Later, the districts of Foni Bintang and Foni Karanai were combined as Foni Bintang-Karanai. These districts referring to this realm still exist in the West Coast region today.
