Foni Bintang-Karanai (spelling variant: Foni Bintang Karanai ) is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative organization - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of nine districts in the West Coast Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 20,185 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 15,994.
history
The name is derived from Foni , a former small empire.
The district emerged from the merger of the two original districts Foni Bintang and Foni Karanai.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at the time ), the largest population group is the Jola with a share of around seven tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 22.4% Mandinka , 4.8% Fula , 0.6% Wolof , 66.3% Jola , 0.5% Serahule , 0.6% Serer , 0% Aku , 3.6% Manjago , 0.1% Bambara and 1% other races.
