Foni Brefet is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of nine districts in the West Coast Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 13,757 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 11,411.
The name is derived from Foni , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at the time ), the largest population group is the Jola with a share of around five-tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 29.5% Mandinka , 9.6% Fula , 1.2% Wolof , 50.5% Jola , 0.5% Serahule , 1.2% Serer , 0% Aku , 5.8% Manjago , 0.3% Bambara and 1.5% other races.
