Foni Kansala is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of nine districts in the West Coast Region .

According to a calculation from 2013 about 17,346 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 12,247.

The name is derived from Foni , a former small empire.

population

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at the time ), the largest population group is the Jola with a share of around seven tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 13.7% Mandinka , 5.6% Fula , 3% Wolof , 71.9% Jola , 2.5% Serahule , 0.9% Serer , 0% Aku , 0.7% Manjago , 0 , 3% Bambara and 1.4% other races.
