Kanilai (spelling variant: Karilai ) is a town in the West African state of Gambia .

According to a calculation for 2013, around 877 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 390.

geography

Kanilai in the West Coast region in the Foni Kansala district is about five kilometers south of the South Bank Road , Gambia's main highway that crosses the whole country from west to east and is about 70 kilometers away from Brikama . Kanilai is right on the border with the Casamance region in Senegal . Mainly residents belonging to the Diola ethnic group settle here.

history

The place is worth mentioning because it is the birthplace of former President Yahya Jammeh . He had a country house built here and is paying a lot of attention to this place. Nearby is the Bugongol community forest , which is partly viewed as private property by the president. It is located near a lodge that accommodates tourists . The Kanilai Game Park can also be found here.

Culture and sights

There are regular sports competitions, Gambian wrestling has a long tradition here, in which the jammeh was often present.

The annual highlight is the Kanilai Cultural Festival .
