Bintang (spelling: Bitang or Portuguese Vintang ) is a town of historical importance in the West African state of Gambia .
According to a calculation for 2013, around 1125 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 632.

Bintang in the West Coast Region , Foni District Bintang-Karanai is located on the largest tributary of the Gambia River , the Bintang Bolong , and is approximately 90 kilometers by road from the capital Banjul .
history
In the history of the Gambia , Bintang was founded in the 15th century as a trading post by the Portuguese . Later, in the 17th century, the place was used by the English as a trading post.
During the American War of Independence (1775–1783) the French attacked numerous British branches in the region, including an attack in 1780 from the water on a British trader's trading post. This was thwarted by the local population, who mainly belonged to the Diola ethnic group. With a 400-strong mobilized group they prevented the French from landing and destroying the factory.
