The Bintang Bolong (spelling: Bitang Bolong or rarely as Vintang Bolong ; French spelling Bintang Bôlon ) is the largest, most water-rich left tributary of the West African Gambia River . On the banks of the river is Bintang , an old trading post .
geography
The Bintang Bolong has its source in the northeast of the Senegalese region of Sédhiou , two and a half kilometers from the Gambian border. This region belongs to the Casamance , which lies between the states of Gambia and Guinea-Bissau . The river flows for a length of about 130 kilometers in a westerly direction until it flows into the Gambia River with a width of about 570 meters . Here at the mouth, at Bintang Point , the water is about five to seven meters deep and there are extensive mangrove forests on its banks .
It is indicated that the flow to the place Sandeng navigable is, however, in practice the onward journey is determined by the low bridge Brumen Bridge at Kalagi hindered. The South Bank Road , Gambia's most important trunk road , runs over the Brumen Bridge, which is around three and a half kilometers from Sandeng .
About halfway along the navigable route, not far from the river bank, lies the larger town of Bwiam . The Süduferstraße also runs through this place.
The Bintang Bolong has numerous tributaries, of which the left-hand Jurungkumani Bolong is the largest.
The addition Bolong , which has many tributaries of the Gambia, means "moving water" or "tributary" in the Mandinka language .
history
In the history of the Gambia , the Bintang Bolong was the border river between the two Mandinka empires, Foni and Kiang . Foni lay on the left, the southern, and Kiang on the northern side of the river.
At the time of the discovery of Africa, the Portuguese sailed this tributary of the Gambia in the 15th century and maintained a trading post at the place Bintang (another, old Portuguese spelling Vintang ). Later this place was used by British traders. Further upriver from Bintang, Santamba is another place that was an old trading post. Only ruins remain of the building of the trading post. Likewise was Kansala a historic place, now can now be found at this point Bwiam.
tourism
Somewhat away from the main points of attraction for tourists in Gambia, there are some lodges on the Bintang Bolong , such as the Bintang Lodge .
