About this picture

The Sédhiou region in Casamance is a region in the south of Senegal with the capital Sédhiou and was newly created in 2008 by reducing the Kolda region by part of its area in the west.

Geographical location

The Sédhiou region lies between the Ziguinchor region in the west and the Kolda region in the east and between the neighboring states of Gambia in the north and Guinea-Bissau in the south.

The largest body of water is the Casamance , which runs through the region from east to west with a width of well over a kilometer and thus serves as a waterway, but at the same time separates life on both banks. The city of Sédhiou is a regional prefecture on its right northern bank. There is a ferry connection to the other bank two kilometers away. The second important river in the region is the Soungrougrou , which is several hundred meters wide in the west and forms the border with the Ziguinchor region to which there is also only one ferry connection at Marsassoum . Its headwaters lie in the Kolda region bordering to the east, and so it also divides the Sédhiou region, so that it consists of the core area between the two rivers and beyond the rivers from the border regions to Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

The Bintang Bolong , the largest tributary on the lower reaches of the Gambia River, has its source in the northeast of the region and flows in a westerly direction until it flows into the Gambia.

structure

The Sédhiou region is divided into three departments:

On the next structural levels, eight arrondissements, 17 municipalities (Communes), 22 rural communities (Communautés rurales) and 920 officially registered villages (Villages) are to be named for 2013.
