About this picture

The region of Kédougou with the capital Kédougou is the most southeastern region of Senegal and therefore furthest away from the capital Dakar . It was created in 2008 when it was separated from the Tambacounda region. The northwest of the region has a significant share in the Niokolo-Koba National Park . In the southwest, three cultural landscapes have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as Bassari Land . Minable iron ore deposits have been identified at Falémé in the southeast .

Geographical location

The Kédougou region borders on the Tambacounda region to the north and west and the neighboring states of Guinea in the south and Mali in the east. The upper reaches of the Gambia River , on which the city of Kédougou is located, flows through the western part . In the north, in the national park, the Niokolo Koba forms the border and in the east is the Falémé , a left southern tributary of the Senegal River , the border river to Mali. Unlike most of the rest of the country, the region does not have the character of flat land or plains. Rather, mountainous areas can also be found here. Here are the highest peaks of Senegal , namely in the south the Nepen Diakha Mountains , the Dindéfelo Highlands , the Iwol Plateau and, last but not least, the Bassari Mountains .

structure

The Kédougou region is divided into three departments:

For 2013, six arrondissements, three communes, 16 rural communities and 317 officially registered villages are to be named on the next structural levels.

traffic

On the national road N 7 , which ends in the town of Kédougou, the region is connected to the national road network. South of Kédougou there is a border crossing of supra-regional importance to Guinea-Conakry on the national road N 8 there . To the east, a paved car route extends the N7 via Saraya to the border with Mali. A bridge over the border river Falémé connects southern Senegal with the Malian national road N24 . This is paved and leads to Bamako via Kita .

An important part of the region's transport infrastructure is the Kédougou airfield . Another airfield, the Niokolo-Koba airfield , is located in the national park.
