The Thiès department with the capital Thiès is one of 45 departments that make up Senegal , and the middle of three departments that make up the Thiès region from north to south. It is located in the central west of Senegal and borders the Dakar metropolitan area .

For Ville de Thiès , the prefecture of the department, the sum of the three communes d'arrondissement (city districts) results in a population of 317,763 inhabitants. Another subdivision level in the urban area is the division into two arrondissements: the arrondissement Thiès Nord for the city district north and the arrondissement Thiès Sud for the city districts east and west.
